Volunteer Handbook
VISION
Volunteers In School Impact Our Needs
Thank you for being an elementary school volunteer! Your interest and concern for children has brought you into the Lakeview school volunteer program. The administration and staff welcome you and hope you will find your experience a rewarding one.
This handbook has been prepared to offer specific information relating to duties and responsibilities of the volunteer at school. It cannot contain all the information necessary, but it is a beginning to help you feel comfortable in the very important task of meeting the volunteer needs of students and teachers.
If you have any additional questions or need other information, please feel free to contact Sara Brautigam (Volunteer Coordinator / (262) 472-8402 / sbrautigam@wwusd.org
'On-Site' Volunteer
Volunteering in a school is an experience and a privilege for both the school and the volunteer. It is designed to promote and maintain a supportive relationship for students, teachers and school staff. Please help keep our program running smoothly by following these guidelines:
Be dependable. The staff you work with will depend on YOU to be present at your scheduled time. Their tasks are planned with your help in mind. If you will not be able to volunteer on a particular day, please notify the school office as soon as possible (472-8400).
Please be prompt. This lets students and staff know they are important to you. Again, if you must be late, please notify the school office.
Always bring your smile
Always sign in at the office when entering the building.
Always wear your volunteer button and/or red lanyard with student ID inserted into plastic sleeve when you are here to volunteer.
Always sign out when leaving the building.
'At-Home' Volunteer
Volunteering from home is a great way to stay connected! It's a great option for individuals whose work schedule doesn't allow the flexibility to volunteer during classroom hours, as well as for stay-at-home parents with young children. Teachers, students and staff benefit greatly from individuals like you who freely share their time, talents and resources. A few guidelines to aid a mutually beneficial relationship ...
Communicate your availability with our Volunteer Coordinator (472-8402). Whether you can help from home one hour a day, one hour a week, or one hour a month, we have projects to fit your availability. Also, your time does not need to be scheduled. Feel free to "check-in" when it is convenient for you, if we can use your help we'll let you know.
Be dependable. Don't commit to more time than you can realistically expect to fulfill (you can change your commitment as often as your schedule demands).
Let Volunteer Coordinator know if you will be unable to complete a project by the requested deadline.
Confidentiality
All of your work is confidential. Anything you hear in the classroom about students and/or staff is considered personal and stays in the classroom. Names of students, teachers and/or staff, their actions and/or abilities are never appropriate topics for discussion outside of school. Volunteers are expected to act in accordance with school and school board policy.
What a Volunteer can Expect from the Cooperating Teacher / Volunteer Coordinator
We will:
Provide specific instruction for assigned tasks.
Provide space for the volunteer to perform tasks.
Provide materials and equipment needed to perform tasks.
Provide feedback to the volunteer.
Provide advance notice to the volunteer when services aren't needed.
Codes - Drills
FIRE: Leave building with students. Walk students to the place where their classroom is assembled and assigned to wait. Remain outside until the "all-clear" bell rings.
TORNADO: Report to the classroom teacher and remain with the class in the assigned safety area. If the alarm is sounded after the school day, take the students to the nearest bathroom, have them assume a seat on the floor, knees pulled up against the body, head down on the knees and arms over head (for as long as needed).
HOLD-LOCK-SECURE: Report to classroom teacher and remain with class in the assigned area. Drill will then be explained by classroom teacher to volunteer as needed.
